English IV
2011-2012
Ms. Ledbetter

Dear Parents:

Your child is currently enrolled in my English IV class. I am looking forward to a successful semester with your child. I have high expectations for my students, and I will be doing my best to help him/her achieve those expectations. Since an open line of communication between parent and teacher is important for student success, the purpose of this letter is to help answer questions you may have.

This year new English books have been adopted by DISD. Each child will receive a SpringBoard book to use at home and in the classroom. Please help us to make sure that your child takes care of this item and uses this wonderful resource. We will be covering several units within the SpringBoard books. These units will contain fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and short story selections. Vocabulary, grammar, and writings will be required in each unit. Occasionally, film/videos are used in the classroom in order to illustrate a particular curricular-related concept. This would include the films Macbeth, A Knight’s Tale, and various versions of Frankenstein. Your signature will indicate permission for your student to view curriculum and school appropriate film/videos related to classroom content and subject.

MAKE-UP WORK FROM ABSENCES
It is the responsibility of the student to check with the teacher, outside of class (before or after school), for assignments missed due to absences. Students have 1 day for each day absent to turn in the work missed and 3 days to make up any test or quiz missed.

LATE WORK
Work accepted one day late will be subject to a 30 point loss. Students have until the end of the current progress report period to turn in assignment for 30 points off. After this time period, the assignment will no longer be accepted. If a student wants to complete an assignment in the allotted time period, they must attend one of the available tutorial options. If a student does not take the opportunity to complete a major test/project, they must write an explanation as to why they chose not to complete the assignment and get it signed by their parents.

TUTORIALS
I am available for tutorials before and after school. Students must let me know that they will be attending tutorials so that I will be in the classroom. School Wide Tutorials are also available. Extended Day is every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 2:45 until 4:45 p.m. DHS also has Open Doors, Lighted Windows every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. School tutorials take place in the library and an English teacher will be there at all times for student questions.

CLASSROOM RULES

Course Objective:
Advanced Placement Composition is a college level English course, taught over two semesters, which provides students with a chance to extend their competence by challenging them with college level texts and writing assignments, following the standardized course of study developed by the College Board Advanced Placement Program. Students will engage in close reading of significant works of literature and write analytically and critically about that literature and other topics.

Students will be encouraged to take the Advance Placement Language and Composition Examination and may earn college credit if they pass with a sufficiently high score (3 or better). National Advanced Placement Exams are given in early May. It is important to remember that while passing the test is important, the real benefit is gained from learning skills that are helpful in all of your classes – both in high school and in college.

Rationale:
To be a thoughtful, productive citizen in the 21st century, an individual must think critically, read widely with full comprehension, and write from a perspective of strength and conviction. This AP English Language and Composition course is designed to challenge students to hone these rhetorical skills to better meet the challenges of the AP exam and of rigorous university standards.

The Scarlet Letter *We will also read selected
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass essays, speeches, poems,
Of Mice and Men pamphlets, & short stories The Great Gatsby and watch various pieces of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn visual media
